Every time the ignition key is turned or the start button is pressed, the automotive starter motor must accomplish an extremely demanding task within one to two seconds——overcoming the engine's massive compression resistance to bring the stationary flywheel up to starting speed. The starter gear extends at high speed and engages with the engine flywheel ring gear, withstanding tremendous impact loads at the moment of engagement; the starter motor then rotates at high speed, transmitting torque through the planetary gear reduction mechanism to the output shaft to drive engine startup.

 

Inside the starter assembly, bearings operate under highly unique conditions.
