Factory Packaging——The First Protective Barrier——NMT rolling mill bearings are subject to strict packaging standards before leaving the factory. After passing final inspection, bearings are first thoroughly cleaned and dried to ensure no machining residues or moisture remain on surfaces. A specialized rust-preventive oil or rust-preventive grease is then uniformly applied to all exposed metal surfaces——volatile rust-preventive oil for short-term transport protection, and high-viscosity rust-preventive grease for long-term storage protection. After rust-preventive coating application, bearings are sealed in inner packaging using rust-preventive paper or VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) film, which continuously releases vapor-phase corrosion inhibitors within the sealed space to form a molecular-level protective layer on metal surfaces. Following inner packaging, bearings are placed in custom wooden crates or high-strength corrugated cartons, with flexible cushioning materials (foam plastic, rubber pads, etc.) fully securing the bearing inside to prevent relative movement and collision during transport. The exterior of the wooden crate is clearly marked with warning labels such as “Precision Instrument,” “Keep Dry,” “Fragile” and “This Side Up,” along with key information including bearing model, weight, date of manufacture and rust-prevention validity period. In accordance with GB/T 8597, the national standard for “Rolling bearings - Rust proof packaging,” NMT's standard rust-proof packaging has a validity period of one year, with sea-freight export packaging valid for over two years.
Protection Points During Transportation——The primary threats faced by large rolling mill bearings during long-distance transport are vibration and impact. NMT specifies clear requirements for the transport phase: bearings must be transported in their original packaging and must not be unpacked during transit. Transport vehicles must be rainproof and moisture-proof, with interior temperature and humidity avoiding severe fluctuations. Effective measures must be taken during transport to prevent severe vibration——heavy vehicles should reduce speed on rough roads, and during rail transport, bearing crates should be placed in the middle of the carriage to minimize vibration transmission. Stacking of bearings during transport must strictly comply with the stacking height limits marked on packaging, with over-height or overweight stacking prohibited. For sea-freight exported bearings, moisture-barrier aluminum foil layers or waterproof tarpaulins should be added to the exterior of packaging, and sufficient desiccants should be placed inside containers to cope with high-humidity marine environments. NMT recommends that upon receiving bearings, users immediately inspect the exterior packaging for damage, deformation or water staining, and take photographs as acceptance records.
Storage Environment Control——Temperature, Humidity and Cleanliness——Once bearings arrive at the user's warehouse, the quality of the storage environment directly determines the effective life of the rust-proof packaging and the preservation quality of the bearings. NMT specifies the following requirements for rolling mill bearing storage environments: Temperature control——warehouse temperature should be maintained within the range of 0-25°C; temperatures that are too low cause rust-preventive oil to solidify and lose protective effect, while temperatures that are too high accelerate rust-preventive oil volatilization and degradation; Humidity control——warehouse relative humidity should be maintained between 45%-60%; excessive humidity accelerates moisture condensation and rusting on metal surfaces; Cleanliness——the warehouse should be kept clean, dry and well-ventilated, and storage with corrosive substances such as acids, alkalis, salts and chemicals in the same facility is strictly prohibited; Storage stacking standards——bearings should be stored on shelves or pallets at least 30cm above the floor, away from heating pipes, heat sources and external walls. Bearings should always be stored flat in a horizontal position, avoiding tilted storage which may cause deformation of large bearings due to their own weight. Inventory management should follow the “first-in, first-out” principle, ensuring that bearings received earlier are used first.
Rust-Prevention Validity Period Management and Periodic Inspection——According to national standards and industry specifications, bearing rust-prevention periods are classified into three grades: six months, one year and two years. NMT standard rust-proof packaging has a validity period of one year, calculated from the date marked on the factory certificate. For bearings with a six-month rust-prevention period (typically batches scheduled for imminent installation), they should be put into use within the validity period. For bearings stored for more than 10-12 months, NMT recommends a rust-prevention status inspection——opening the inner packaging to inspect raceway and rolling element surfaces for rust spots, discoloration or dried-out rust-preventive oil. If rust-preventive oil has dried out or light surface rust has appeared, the bearing should be re-cleaned, re-oiled and re-packaged. If severe rust is found, the bearing must be returned to the NMT factory for professional rust removal and precision inspection before use. For bearings exceeding two years of rust-prevention validity, even if appearance appears good, it is recommended to re-clean and re-apply rust prevention before installation and use.
Unpacking Inspection and Acceptance Standards——When bearings are about to be installed, proper unpacking and inspection procedures are critically important. NMT requires that unpacking operations be conducted in clean, dry indoor environments; unpacking in open air or in dusty workshop areas is strictly prohibited. Appropriate tools should be used during unpacking, avoiding sharp instruments that could scratch bearing packaging or directly contact bearing surfaces. After removing the bearing, first verify that the bearing model, factory serial number and accompanying technical documentation are consistent. Then proceed with visual inspection——visually inspect raceways, rolling elements, cages and seals for rust, impact damage, scratches or deformation. For four-row tapered roller bearings, check that matching marks on inner ring assemblies and outer rings are consistent. For large bearings, it is recommended to use a dial gauge or vernier caliper to spot-check critical dimensions (bore, outside diameter, width) to ensure they fall within drawing tolerance ranges. If any abnormality is found, installation should be immediately halted and NMT technical support contacted; forced installation must never be attempted.
Temporary Protection and Short-Term Storage Before Installation——If bearings cannot be installed immediately after unpacking inspection (e.g., waiting for a mill roll change window), temporary protection measures should be taken. Bearings whose original packaging has been removed should immediately have temporary rust-preventive oil or grease applied to exposed surfaces and be wrapped in clean rust-preventive paper or plastic film. Temporarily stored bearings should be placed on clean, dry shelves, away from vibration sources and heat sources. Unpacked bearings should ideally be installed within 72 hours; if this period is exceeded, reapplication of rust prevention is required. Unpacked bearings must never be left exposed on workshop floors or near cooling water areas.
Handling and Lifting Operation Standards——Large rolling mill bearings require special care during handling and lifting. NMT requires the use of dedicated lifting slings or belts during handling; the use of wire ropes to directly bind bearing rings is prohibited. Lifting points should be selected at reinforced areas of the bearing outer ring, avoiding application of force on rolling elements or cages. Bearings should be kept horizontal during handling, avoiding large tilts or overturning. For short-distance manual handling, operators should wear clean gloves to prevent sweat from corroding bearing surfaces.
Final Confirmation Before Installation——Before formal bearing installation, NMT recommends that users complete the following final confirmation items: confirm that the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the roll neck and bearing housing bore meet installation requirements; confirm that installation tools (press tools, hydraulic pumps, heaters, dial gauges, etc.) are ready and in good condition; confirm that installation site cleanliness meets requirements; confirm that installation operators are familiar with the installation standards and clearance setting requirements for this bearing model. Only when all preconditions are satisfied should formal bearing installation commence.
