NMT Steel and Metallurgical Rolling Mill Bearings Green Manufacturing and Sustainable Development Full Lifecycle Environmental Solution

Against the backdrop of global climate governance and the “dual carbon” goals, the steel industry, as a major carbon emitter, faces unprecedented pressure for green transformation. Statistics show that the steel industry accounts for approximately 25%-30% of global industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Throughout the entire steel production process, the rolling process is not only a key energy-consuming link, but the indirect carbon emissions generated by equipment maintenance and consumable usage are equally significant.

The carbon footprint of a rolling mill bearing extends far beyond the energy consumption and material emissions during its manufacturing process. It also includes: friction energy consumption during bearing operation (additional electricity consumption corresponds to carbon emissions from power generation), grease consumption and waste disposal (environmental pollution from waste grease and treatment energy consumption), carbon emissions from manufacturing new bearings due to premature bearing failure (manufacturing a new bearing generates carbon emissions several times its own weight), and material waste and disposal costs of scrapped bearings. In today's context of steel enterprises pursuing green and low-carbon transformation, the environmental attributes of rolling mill bearings——long life, low friction, full sealing, and remanufacturability——are no longer just added value, but critical competitive factors determining an enterprise's sustainable development capability.

NMT Green Rolling Mill Bearings: Full Lifecycle Environmental Solution from Manufacturing to Regeneration

Japan NMT integrates green manufacturing philosophy throughout the entire chain of rolling mill bearing R&D, design, manufacturing, usage and remanufacturing, reducing the environmental load of bearing products at the source and helping users achieve green rolling and low-carbon operations.

Long-Life Design——Reducing Replacement Frequency and Full Lifecycle Carbon Emissions——Extending bearing service life is the most direct way to reduce full lifecycle carbon emissions of bearings. Every avoided premature bearing replacement eliminates the carbon emissions from the entire chain of bearing steel smelting, forging, heat treatment, machining and transportation. NMT rolling mill bearings achieve ultra-long life through three major technological paths: high-purity bearing steel (vacuum degassing + electroslag remelting double refining, significantly reducing non-metallic inclusion content and size, eliminating fatigue crack initiation sources at the material source), optimized logarithmic roller crowning (eliminating edge stress concentration at roller ends, ensuring uniform load distribution along the full roller length, greatly extending contact fatigue life), and precise heat treatment processes (“hard exterior, tough interior” structure——surface HRC60-64 resists wear and indentation, while the tough core absorbs impact energy). In practical applications, NMT long-life bearings have a design life exceeding 100,000 hours, extending 30%-50% beyond conventional bearings. This means that over the same service period, bearing replacement quantities are reduced by 30%-50%, with corresponding carbon emission reductions of 30%-50%.

Low-Friction Design——Reducing Operating Energy Consumption and Indirect Carbon Emissions——Bearing friction resistance during operation directly translates into additional electricity consumption. In large rolling mills, bearing friction losses can account for 5%-10% of main drive motor energy consumption. Through raceway superfinishing and smooth polishing, logarithmic roller crowning, low-friction cage design and optimized grease channels, NMT reduces bearing friction torque by 8%-12% compared to conventional designs. For a hot rolling line with an annual output of 5 million tons, the reduction in bearing friction energy consumption can save approximately 2-5 million kWh of electricity annually, corresponding to carbon emission reductions of approximately 1,500-4,000 tons. Low-friction design not only reduces operating costs but also tangibly reduces the carbon footprint of mill operation.

Fully Sealed Bearings——Eliminating Grease Leakage and Waste Grease Pollution——Conventional open-type rolling mill bearings experience rapid grease loss and waste grease leakage during high-speed operation, polluting the environment. This causes frequent cyclical fluctuations in lubrication conditions, reducing actual bearing life below expected life and increasing direct bearing usage costs. Open bearings also have environmental pain points including high grease consumption and high waste grease treatment costs. NMT fully sealed bearings employ a triple protection system of labyrinth seals + contact rubber seals + metal shields, firmly locking grease inside the bearing. Seal lip materials use specialty rubber (FKM/HNBR) resistant to water, steam and temperature variations, maintaining elasticity and sealing performance under frequent water spray and high-temperature conditions. The direct environmental benefits of fully sealed design include: grease consumption reduced to less than 1/10 of open bearings; tens of barrels of grease saved annually; elimination of environmental pollution risks from waste grease to soil and water bodies; and significantly extended bearing life due to consistently clean internal lubrication environment.

Remanufacturing and Circular Utilization——Giving Bearings a Second and Third Life——When bearing raceway surfaces develop fatigue spalling or wear, they need not simply be scrapped. NMT remanufacturing services remove fatigue layers from raceway surfaces through precision grinding, restoring raceway geometric accuracy and surface quality; simultaneously replace rolling elements and cages with new components of the same specifications; and perform clearance matching and accuracy re-inspection. Remanufactured bearings can achieve 95%-100% of new product accuracy and load capacity, while remanufacturing costs are only 40%-60% of new bearing purchase prices. Even more importantly, carbon emissions during remanufacturing are far lower than manufacturing a new bearing——compared to producing new bearings, remanufacturing can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 80%. For steel enterprises, choosing bearing remanufacturing instead of direct replacement is not only an economically sound decision but also a substantive contribution to “dual carbon” goals.

Green Steel and Low-Carbon Manufacturing——Reducing Carbon Footprint at the Material Source——In response to the green supply chain trend in the bearing industry, NMT promotes the application of low-carbon steel materials at the bearing material end. Through deep cooperation with upstream special steel enterprises, NMT prioritizes low-carbon bearing steel manufactured using high比例的 scrap steel recycling and renewable energy. The carbon footprint of such bearing steel is more than 50% lower than conventional bearing steel. NMT also optimizes the energy structure during bearing manufacturing——heat treatment processes adopt high-efficiency induction heating technology to replace conventional resistance heating, improving energy efficiency by over 30%; machining processes adopt minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technology, reducing cutting fluid consumption by over 90% and significantly reducing the generation and treatment costs of oily waste fluid.

Lightweight Design——Reducing Material Consumption and Transportation Carbon Emissions——Under the premise of ensuring load capacity and reliability, NMT performs lightweight design on bearing rings and cages through topology optimization and finite element analysis. Optimized bearings are 5%-10% lighter than conventional designs, directly reducing steel consumption during bearing manufacturing (corresponding to reduced carbon emissions from smelting) while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions during transportation. The effect of lightweight design is particularly significant for large rolling mill bearings——each bearing set can be reduced by tens to hundreds of kilograms, with cumulative effects being substantial.

Eco-Friendly Packaging and Logistics Optimization——NMT has completely eliminated chlorine-containing plastics and non-degradable materials in bearing packaging, adopting recyclable pulp molding, biodegradable rust-preventive paper and reusable metal/wooden packaging boxes. Packaging material recycling rates have been increased to over 90%. In the logistics phase, NMT optimizes distribution networks and consolidates shipping schedules to reduce transport frequency and empty-load rates, lowering logistics carbon emissions.
