NMT High-Reliability Bearings for Paper Machinery – Dryer Cylinders, Press Sections, Wet Ends & Reel Sections – Heat-Resistant, Corrosion-Resistant & Fiber-Proof, In Stock & Customizable
I. Paper Machine Bearing: When "High Speed Continuity" Meets "High Temperature and High Humidity"
The paper machine is one of the most typical continuous production equipment in the industrial field. From pulp flow transportation, web forming, pressing and dehydration, drying cylinders, drying and rolling, to winding and rewinding, the entire paper production line operates non-stop for 24 hours, with a speed of up to several hundred meters to nearly two kilometers per minute. The bearings in key parts such as drying cylinders, pressing sections, web sections, and winding sections are constantly exposed to extreme conditions of high temperature (above 100°C), high humidity, chemical corrosion, fiber entanglement, and continuous heavy load. The equipment that requires regular maintenance in the paper machinery (such as drying cylinder bearings) is precisely the core application scenario for high-reliability bearings. Applications in the pulp and paper industry include: fans, mixing and stirring equipment, drying cylinders, transmission devices and transmission shafts, conveying equipment, etc.
The four core challenges faced by paper machine bearings:
High-temperature steam environment – The drying cylinders have been in a high-temperature (above 100°C) environment for a long time. The drying cylinders are exposed to 140-185°C steam, and the thermal expansion of the shaft is large, with a large temperature difference between the inner and outer rings. High temperature is prone to deteriorating the lubricating grease. Ordinary bearing materials lose hardness at high temperatures and carbonize the lubricating grease, significantly reducing the bearing life.
Chemical corrosion and high humidity environment – The wet section to the drying section of the paper production line all have high humidity and chemical agents (gluing agents, bleaching agents, acid and alkali solutions). Ordinary bearing steel rusts rapidly in a humid and chemical corrosion environment, and seals fail due to aging.
Fiber entanglement and contamination – During the paper production process, a large amount of plant fibers and pulp debris are produced. The fibers entangle in the bearing seal structure, damaging the seal and entering the bearing interior, mixing with the lubricating grease, and accelerating the wear of the raceways and rolling elements.
Continuous heavy-load operation – The paper machine operates continuously at high speed for 24 hours, with bearings bearing continuous radial loads and axial thrusts. Fatigue life is under severe test.
II. High Purity Bearing Steel + Special Stabilization Heat Treatment – "Size Stabilization God's Needle" in High Temperature and High Humidity Conditions
✅ High-purity bearing steel – NMT uses vacuum degassing high-purity bearing steel, significantly reducing the content of non-metallic inclusions. In the high-temperature alternating stress of the paper machinery bearings, inclusions are the main source of fatigue cracks. The improvement in material purity directly translates to the fatigue life of the bearings in high-temperature and high-humidity conditions.
✅ Dimensional stabilization heat treatment – NMT uses precisely controlled quenching, deep cooling treatment, and multiple tempering processes to make the microstructure of the bearing steel more dense and stable, and to control the residual austenite content within an ideal range. This is crucial for the drying cylinder bearings – the drying cylinder shaft undergoes large thermal expansion and has a large temperature difference between the inner and outer rings, and dimensional stability directly determines the ability of the bearing to maintain clearance and accuracy stability during long-term operation at high temperatures, preventing size changes and bearing jamming due to residual austenite transformation.
✅ Heat stabilization treatment selection – For the high-temperature conditions of the drying cylinder, NMT provides heat-stabilized bearing, with a maximum working temperature of up to 150-200°C. The heat-stabilized steel bearing has stronger high-temperature resistance, lower failure risk, and extends the service life.
✅ Ultra-precision machined raceways – The raceways are ultra-precision ground to a mirror surface, significantly reducing the friction coefficient of the rolling contact surface, reducing heat generation, and prolonging the service life of the bearings in continuous operation conditions.
III. Position-specific Bearing Solution – Precisely Adapt to the Four Core Systems of the Paper Machine
▸ Drying cylinder bearing
The drying cylinder is the core equipment of the drying section of the paper machine, and the bearings are constantly exposed to a high-temperature (above 100°C) steam environment, bearing continuous loads from the drying cylinder's own weight and paper tension. NMT provides high-temperature deep groove ball bearings and high-temperature self-aligning roller bearing solutions. Deep groove ball bearings are suitable for the radial support of small and medium-sized drying cylinders; self-aligning roller bearings have the ability to automatically align and can compensate for the thermal expansion of the drying cylinder shaft and installation deviations. Using heat stabilization treatment, it maintains dimensional stability in high-temperature conditions. C4 large clearance compensation for the drying cylinder shaft to accommodate thermal expansion and prevent overheating jamming. High-precision cages (made of brass or steel) maintain structural integrity at high temperatures.
▸ Pressing cylinder bearings
The pressing cylinder bears high-line pressure and repeated impact loads, and the bearings face a combined test of heavy load, high humidity, and chemical corrosion. NMT provides double-row angular contact ball bearings and cylindrical roller bearing solutions. Double-row angular contact ball bearings offer high rigidity and bidirectional axial load capacity in a compact space; cylindrical roller bearings adapt to the heavy load conditions of the pressing rolls with high radial load capacity. Multiple sealing structures prevent high-pressure spray water and chemical agents from invading.
▸ Meshing and forming cylinder bearings
The meshing section is the starting point of paper sheet formation, and the bearings are in contact with slurry, water, and chemical additives for a long time, being in a high-humidity and slightly corrosive environment. NMT provides stainless steel deep groove ball bearings and stainless steel sleeve bearing units solutions. 304/316L stainless steel material resists slurry and chemical corrosion. Multiple seals prevent water and fibers from invading. The low-friction design adapts to the high-speed operation requirements of the meshing section.
▸ Take-up and rewinder bearings
The take-up section and rewinder require high precision and low vibration, and the bearings bear high-speed rotation and alternating loads. NMT provides precision angular contact ball bearings and precision cylindrical roller bearing solutions. High precision grades (P4/P5) ensure the accuracy of take-up and rewinding. The low-vibration design ensures uniform paper roll tightness and straight end faces. The high-speed retainers optimize to adapt to the high-speed operation of the take-up section.
Four, Multiple Sealing System – Barrier against moisture, chemicals and fiber entanglement
Paper-making equipment is constantly exposed to harsh working conditions such as high-temperature steam, chemical splashes, and fiber dust. NMT's paper-making machinery bearings adopt a multiple sealing system specifically designed for the paper-making environment:
▷ The first layer: Stainless steel splash-proof cover – Blocks direct impact of high-pressure spray water and chemical agents, reducing the instantaneous pressure on the sealing components.
▷ The second layer: Radial labyrinth channels – Multiple curved channels utilize rotational centrifugal force to expel possible invading moisture, chemical droplets, and fiber dust, making the path of pollutant invasion extremely complex.
▷ The third layer: FKM (fluororubber) contact seal (2RS) – The innermost layer seal uses FKM material, which is resistant to high temperatures (up to 200°C) and chemical corrosion. The sealing lip closely adheres to the rotating surface of the inner ring, effectively locking in lubricating grease and blocking fine moisture, chemicals, and fibers from invading. Fluororubber seals can better resist paper-making chemicals (gluing agents, bleaching agents).
Five, Special Lubrication Solution – Adapt to high-temperature of drying cylinders and high-humidity wet end
Paper-making machinery bearings are widely distributed and have significant differences in working conditions. NMT provides a graded lubrication solution:
▷ Drying cylinder bearings: High-temperature resistant lubricating grease
Suitable for high-temperature working conditions of the drying cylinder (up to 180°C). Synthetic base oil mixed with high-temperature thickening agent, does not carbonize or lose in high temperatures. Excellent oxidation resistance, maintaining stable lubrication performance under continuous high-temperature conditions.
▷ Wet end and pressing cylinder bearings: Anti-water extreme pressure lubricating grease
Suitable for high-humidity environments such as the meshing section and pressing cylinder. Excellent anti-water spray performance and rust resistance, maintains lubricating grease not emulsifying or losing in high-pressure spray water environment. Add extreme pressure anti-wear additives to adapt to the heavy load conditions of the pressing cylinder.
▷ High-speed bearings: Low-noise high-speed lubricating grease
Suitable for high-speed operation of the take-up section and rewinder. Low-viscosity base oil combined with friction-reducing additives, reduces friction noise, and has excellent high-speed stability.
Six, Quality Control – Full Chain Guarantee from Materials to Finished Products
NMT implements a strict quality control system for paper-making machinery bearings:
High-temperature dimensional stability testing – Tests the bearing size changes in a 100-200°C constant temperature box to verify the effect of heat stabilization treatment and clearance retention capability. High-temperature continuous operation test - Continuous operation in a constant temperature box ranging from 120 to 180℃, to verify the stability of the lubricating grease and the dimensional stability
Sealing performance verification - Simulate the high-temperature and high-humidity environment and chemical splashing in the paper mill, to test the sealing effectiveness and waterproof performance
Noise and vibration detection - Test the operating noise and vibration values of each set, to ensure the low-noise operation requirements of the paper machine
Dimensional accuracy detection - Test the inner diameter, outer diameter, width, radial clearance and starting torque of each set, to ensure consistency
All non-conforming products shall be scrapped. Bearings of the same batch are highly consistent in terms of dimensions, clearance, and vibration values, facilitating unified management and planned replacement of spare parts by the paper mill.
VII. Spot inventory + Non-standard customization - Guarantee for emergency repair of the paper mill
Common bearing models for paper machinery (deep groove ball bearings, self-aligning roller bearings, angular contact ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings) are always in stock - Covering 80% or more of the bearing replacement requirements for the drying cylinder, pressing section, meshing section, and winding section. The paper mill responds quickly to emergency failures, minimizing unplanned downtime.
Customization projects - Special inner and outer diameters/widths, customized clearance (C3/C4/C5), heat stabilization treatment, stainless steel material, special sealing material (FKM/polyurethane), special lubricating grease filling (high-temperature resistant/water-resistant), special cage material (brass/steel).
Quick prototyping based on old bearings or drawings - Small batch urgent orders are delivered quickly. Affordable replacement of imported brands (SKF, FAG, NSK, NTN, TIMKEN), significantly reducing procurement costs.
VIII. Full life cycle cost optimization - Reduce downtime and paper quality degradation losses
For every hour of unplanned downtime of the paper mill, the loss is the production capacity and paper quality of the entire production line. Paper machine breakage, difficulty in feeding paper, etc., behind these failures are often bearing problems. Frequent bearing replacements not only increase maintenance costs but also lead to paper quality degradation and customer complaints.
Implicit costs of low-priced ordinary bearings:
Lubricating grease carbonization in high-temperature conditions causes drying cylinder bearings to need replacement within 6 to 12 months
Chemical corrosion leads to premature failure of wet-end bearings, doubling the maintenance cost
Fiber winding damages the seal, accelerating bearing wear
Drying cylinder shaft thermal expansion causes ordinary bearings to jam, potentially damaging the drying cylinder shaft and housing
Bearings vibration causes paper sheet jitter, fluctuation in paper quality, and huge loss of grade degradation
NMT paper machinery special bearings have a stable service life of 24 to 36 months on the drying cylinder, pressing section, meshing section, and winding section:
Replacement frequency is reduced by more than 50% - Annual unplanned downtime is significantly reduced, ensuring production line efficiency
Dimensional stabilization treatment maintains high-temperature accuracy - Precise control of residual austenite content, stable radial clearance at high temperatures, no jamming
Multiple seals prevent water vapor and fibers - Effective control of chemical and fiber intrusion, maintaining clean lubricating grease
Heat stabilization treatment adapts to high-temperature drying cylinder - Dimensional stability at high temperatures, extended bearing life
Extended lifespan of supporting components (drying cylinder shaft, housing, seals) - Lengthens the major overhaul cycle of the entire machine, significantly reduces overall holding costs
For paper mills, pulp factories, and paper product manufacturers, the comprehensive holding costs of NMT paper machinery special bearings are much lower than the repeated replacement costs of low-priced bearings - What is saved is not the difference in bearing prices, but the certainty of continuous stable operation of the paper machine and reliable paper quality over time.
