NMT Railway & Transit Bearings – Full-System Precision Support from Axleboxes to Traction Motors – Systematic Engineering Solutions for 1.2 Million km Maintenance-Free Intervals & Extreme Environment Reliability

I. Rail Transit Bearings: The Ultimate Testbed for Speed, Safety and Reliability

Rail transit is one of the most demanding application fields for bearings. A high-speed trainset traveling at 350 kilometers per hour has an axle box bearing that withstands a load of over 2,400 revolutions per minute; a set of axle box bearings supports the entire vehicle's body weight and load, while also bearing forces in all directions caused by the vehicle's swaying during operation; in the Russian Velaro high-speed train project, axle box bearings are required to withstand at least 12 joules of impact force in a -50°C environment.

In the rail transit field, if a bearing fails, the consequences are far more serious than just downtime losses - it directly affects the safety of the train and the lives of thousands of passengers. Therefore, rail transit bearings must meet three core requirements: ultra-high reliability, ultra-long lifespan, and extreme environment adaptability.

The key bearings of a rail vehicle are distributed in three core areas: axle box bearings (supporting the wheelset and bearing the vehicle's body weight), gearbox bearings (transmitting traction power), and traction motor bearings (driving the motor rotor to rotate at high speed). Each area has its unique working conditions and technical requirements.

NMT, a leading provider in the bearing field, offers a systematic solution of sealed conical roller bearings, insulated hybrid ceramic bearings, and long-life cylindrical roller bearings to provide full-range precision support for axle box, gearbox, and traction motor in rail transit - ensuring each train safely, punctually, and comfortably arrives at its destination.

II. Axle Box Bearings: The "First Line of Defense" for Bearinging the Train's Weight

Axle box bearings are one of the most critical security components in rail vehicles. They are installed at the connection point between the wheel and the bogie, bearing the entire vehicle's body weight and load, and also bearing forces in all directions caused by the vehicle's swaying during operation - in addition to static and dynamic radial loads, they also need to withstand complex axial loads.

The core challenges of axle box bearings

The working conditions of axle box bearings are extremely complex: during train operation, axle box bearings are subjected to continuous high-frequency vibration and high impact loads; at high speeds, axle box bearings must maintain accuracy at a rotational speed of thousands of revolutions per minute; when the train passes through curves, the bearings bear additional axial thrust; in adverse weather conditions, the bearings also need to resist the invasion of rain, ice, and sand.

Rail transit axle box bearings are moving from oil bath lubrication to sealed grease lubrication. Modern advanced axle box bearings adopt an "internal pre-filled grease, both ends self-sealing" maintenance-free bearing unit design, with a maintenance-free cycle of up to 120,000 kilometers or 8 years (whichever comes first). The bearing accuracy is not lower than P5 grade.

NMT's response plan

NMT's sealed conical roller bearings are the ideal choice for axle box applications. The conical geometric design of the conical roller bearings enables them to withstand both radial and axial combined loads, maintaining stable rotational accuracy under the dual loads of the wheelset weight and curve thrust.

To meet the maintenance-free requirements of axle box bearings, NMT adopts a multi-layer sealing structure - adding an oil seal ring on top of the labyrinth seal to form multiple barriers against dust and water, effectively blocking the invasion of rain, sand, and gravel. The bearing is pre-filled with high-quality lithium-based lubricating grease, combined with an optimized rolling surface treatment process, effectively ensuring the lifespan of the lubricating grease within the 120,000-kilometer maintenance-free period. NMT sealed bearings are compatible with various types of axle end structures equipped with components such as axle slip monitoring gears.

III. Gearbox Bearings: The "Precise Hub" for Power Transmission

Gearbox is the core component of the traction transmission system in rail vehicles. It converts the high-speed rotation of the traction motor into the torque and speed required by the wheels. The bearings in the gearbox transmit tens of kilowatts to thousands of kilowatts of power in a high-speed, heavy-load, and continuously vibrating environment.

The core challenges of gearbox bearings The bearings of the rail transit gearbox mainly adopt the structure of tapered roller bearings, and they can also use four-point contact ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, and deep groove ball bearings, etc. The bearings of the gearbox need to maintain extremely high rotational accuracy during high-speed operation and also withstand the radial loads and axial thrust generated by the gear meshing.

The lubricating oil in the gearbox contains metal particles generated by the gear meshing, which will accelerate the wear of the bearings. The bearings must maintain long-term reliability under boundary lubrication conditions. Compared with axle box bearings and traction motor bearings, the working conditions of the gearbox bearings are more complex - the rotational speed changes frequently, the load direction is variable, and the vibration persists continuously.

NMT's response plan

The NMT special cylindrical roller bearings for the gearbox provide extremely high radial load-bearing capacity with a line contact structure. The optimized roller contour design eliminates edge stress concentration, allowing the contact stress to be uniformly distributed along the length of the roller, and can delay the initiation of fatigue cracks even under boundary lubrication conditions.

For the gearbox parts that need to withstand both radial and axial loads, NMT provides a paired tapered roller bearing solution - through precise pre-tightening control to eliminate internal clearance, ensuring no backlash or impact during load reversal. The precision grade of NMT gearbox bearings reaches above P5, meeting the requirements of high rotational speed, long lifespan, and high reliability of the rail transit gearbox.

Four. Traction Motor Bearings: The "Power Heart" in High-Speed Rotation

The traction motor is the "power heart" of the rail vehicle. The rotor of the motor rotates at several thousand revolutions per minute, converting electrical energy into mechanical energy to drive the train forward. The traction motor bearings withstand continuous radial loads and frequent start-stop impacts during high-speed rotation.

The core challenge of traction motor bearings

The traction motor bearings mainly bear radial loads, while being affected by the vibration of the running frame, and also need to withstand certain dynamic loads. Compared with axle box bearings and gearbox bearings, the calculated service life of traction motor bearings is much longer.

Traction motor bearings face a unique threat - axial current erosion. In AC traction motors, the shaft voltage may form a discharge circuit through the bearings, causing electrical erosion damage on the raceway surface. To prevent erosion, modern traction motor bearings increasingly adopt insulation coatings or mixed ceramic technologies.

NMT's response plan

NMT traction motor special insulated bearings provide multiple anti-erosion solutions: the outer ring with an insulation coating, the inner ring with an insulation coating, and mixed ceramic bearings (ceramic rollers combined with steel outer rings). The mixed ceramic bearings can withstand up to 3000 volts of insulation voltage, completely blocking the conductive path of the axial current.

NMT mixed ceramic bearings replace steel balls with silicon nitride ceramic balls - ceramic balls are non-conductive, fundamentally eliminating the risk of erosion. At the same time, ceramic balls have a density of only 40% of steel balls, significantly reducing centrifugal force during high-speed rotation, reducing contact stress, and lowering temperature rise. Ceramic materials also have lower friction coefficients and higher hardness, enabling the bearings to maintain a longer service life and lower maintenance requirements during high-speed operation of the traction motor.

For the high-temperature working conditions of the traction motor, NMT uses more heat-resistant and durable composite lithium soap lubricating grease to maintain stable lubrication performance during continuous high-speed operation.

Five. Common Technologies for Rail Transit Bearings: Sealing, Lubrication and Insulation

Although the working conditions of axle box, gearbox and traction motor bearings are different, they share three common technical challenges: sealing, lubrication and insulation.

Sealing - The barrier against external contamination

Railway transit bearings are constantly exposed to rain, ice, sand, dust and gravel. The sealing performance of the bearings directly determines the degree of intrusion of contaminants and the service life of the bearings. Traditional non-contact sealing structures have poor sealing performance and a shorter maintenance-free period. NMT rail transit bearings adopt a multi-layer sealing design - an additional oil seal ring is added on the basis of the labyrinth seal structure, forming multiple dust-proof and water-proof barriers. This sealing design, without hindering the rotation of the bearings, effectively blocks the intrusion of external contaminants through the narrow labyrinth channels and the dual protection of the oil seal rings.

Lubrication - the key to extending maintenance cycles

Rail transit bearings are developing towards the direction of "pre-filling with grease, full sealing, and maintenance-free". NMT rail transit bearings are pre-filled with high-quality grease at the factory, and no additional lubrication is required throughout the maintenance-free period. The optimized roller surface treatment and the control of the roughness of the ring surfaces effectively ensure the service life of the grease.

Insulation - a guarantee against electrical corrosion

In electrified rail transit, the insulation performance of the traction motor bearings is of crucial importance. NMT hybrid ceramic bearings and coated insulation bearings provide a reliable anti-electric corrosion solution for the traction motor, ensuring the reliable operation of the bearings in high-voltage environments for a long time.

Six. Core product layout of NMT rail transit bearings

Sealing tapered roller bearing units (axle boxes)

Suitable for axle boxes of railway passenger cars, freight cars, subways, and high-speed EMUs. The internal pre-filling of grease and the self-sealing at both ends of the maintenance-free design ensure a maintenance-free period of up to 120,000 kilometers or 8 years. The precision is not lower than P5 level, and it can withstand high impact loads and compound loads.

Cylindrical roller bearings (gearboxes and traction motors)

Suitable for heavy-duty radial support of gearboxes and traction motors. The line contact structure provides extremely high radial bearing capacity, and the optimized roller contour eliminates edge stress concentration, with a precision grade of P5 or above.

Insulating hybrid ceramic bearings (traction motors)

Suitable for AC traction motors to prevent axial current electrical corrosion. Silicon nitride ceramic balls combined with insulating coatings can withstand an insulation voltage of up to 3000 volts. The density of the ceramic balls is only 40% of that of steel balls, resulting in lower centrifugal force, lower temperature rise, and longer lifespan.

Paired tapered roller bearings (gearboxes)

Suitable for parts in gearboxes that need to withstand both radial and axial loads simultaneously. Precise pairing and pre-tightening eliminate internal clearance, ensuring no backlash or impact during load reversal.

Seven. Engineering value of NMT rail transit bearings

The value of rail transit is not determined by the purchase price of a single set of equipment - it is determined by whether each train can safely, punctually, and comfortably complete each journey.

In the axle boxes of high-speed EMUs, the 120,000-kilometer maintenance-free design of NMT sealed tapered roller bearings allows the train to complete long runs without mid-journey maintenance. In the gearboxes of subway vehicles, the high bearing capacity and long lifespan of NMT cylindrical roller bearings ensure the punctuality of urban rail transit. In the traction motors of electric locomotives, the insulation characteristics of NMT hybrid ceramic bearings protect the "power heart" of the traction motor during each rotation in high-voltage environments.

From -50°C cold to 40°C heat, from high-speed trains traveling at 350 kilometers per hour to subway stations with stops at each station, NMT dedicated rail transit bearings provide reliable and precise support for each train on every section of the railway - ensuring each departure is on time, each arrival is safe, and each passenger is at ease.
