I. Core Faults of Cotton Harvester Bearings
The cotton harvester is the core equipment for cotton harvesting. It operates intensively during the harvest window period from September to November each year. If it stops due to bearing failure, the entire harvest for the season will be lost. Cotton harvesters usually have 4 to 6 picking heads, and the rolling bearings in the gearboxes of the picking heads are prone to fatigue wear and other issues due to the weak load-bearing capacity and harsh working environment caused by the equipment's operation. The rolling bearings have become one of the most frequently faulty mechanical components in the picking head gearboxes.
Common failure modes:
Cotton絮 entanglement and fiber contamination - During the operation of the cotton picker, a large amount of cotton fibers, cotton seed hull debris and plant fibers are produced. Once the bearing sealing structure is entangled with fibers, the seal fails and the cotton fibers enter the bearing interior, mixing with the lubricating grease to form fiber abrasive particles, accelerating the wear of the raceways and rolling elements. The bearings in parts such as the picker claw seat tube are prone to entanglement during operation and are difficult to remove, which can easily lead to poor rotational flexibility.
Sediment and dust intrusion – The cotton field operation environment is filled with soil, sand, and plant debris. The cotton picker bearings are subjected to heavy loads, intense vibrations and impacts, as well as contamination, dust, and other harsh conditions. Dust enters the bearings and mixes with the lubricating grease to form grinding paste, accelerating the wear of the rolling elements and raceways. In severe cases, it can cause the bearings to become stuck.
Lubricant loss and insufficient lubrication – The oil-containing bearings of the cotton picker's stripper assembly often encounter the problem of insufficient lubricant supply. The traditional bearing sealing structure is simple, and the lubricating oil gradually leaks out under the high-speed rotation and vibration. When lubrication is insufficient, the bearing becomes dry and wears out, with a sharp increase in temperature, and eventually burns out.
Impact load causes fatigue spalling - When the cotton picker's harvesting head uses a single-bearing-supported gear, the force is uneven and the swing is large, making the gear prone to wear. During the harvesting process, the cotton picker head is constantly subjected to the impact and vibration from the cotton plants. Ordinary bearings develop fatigue spalling on the raceway surface under alternating stress.
High-speed wear - The spindle bearings of cotton harvesters typically rotate at speeds ranging from 2500 to 3800 r/min. Under high-speed rotation conditions, the rolling elements and raceways of ordinary bearings are subjected to continuous friction and thermal stress, resulting in a significant acceleration of wear.
II. Maintenance-Free Bearing Unit - Factory Pre-Lubrication for Lifelong Sealing
✅ Maintenance-Free Definition - The maintenance-free bearing unit of the NMT cotton picker is pre-lubricated and sealed for a lifetime at the factory. After installation, no field grease injection maintenance is required. The bearing housing with an outer spherical surface bearing is composed of two spherical surface bearings with sealing surfaces and a cast (or steel plate stamped) bearing housing. The maintenance-free design completely eliminates the cumbersome task of frequent grease injection during the harvest season.
✅ High carbon chromium bearing steel (GCr15) – The NMT cotton picker bearings are made of high carbon chromium bearing steel (fully quenched type) (GCr15). GCr15 bearing steel has excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance, with a uniform and stable surface hardness ranging from HRC60 to 64. It can withstand the high-speed rotation and continuous impact loads of the cotton picker.
✅ Automatic centering design of the inner ring – The NMT cotton picker bearings adopt a wide inner ring design, providing excellent shaft support. The outer raceway of the spherical ball bearing is machined into a spherical shape, featuring centering performance. It can automatically compensate for shaft deflection deformation and installation coaxiality deviation, and counteract the stress caused by the vibration of the cotton picker head and the bumps on the ground.
✅ Long-life pre-lubrication - The NMT cotton picker bearings are filled with special cotton picker lubricating grease upon leaving the factory, with an applicable temperature range of -20 to 120℃. The large-capacity grease storage space ensures that the sealed bearings do not require any maintenance throughout the cotton harvest season. Combined with the long-lasting lubricating grease design, it significantly reduces the frequency of the cotton picker's downtime for maintenance.
✅ Dual-bearing support structure – To address the issue of uneven force distribution and large swinging of the cotton-picking head, NMT recommends a structural solution where the steering gear is supported by dual bearings. The end holes of the two deep groove ball bearings are fixed with retaining rings, and a washer is installed between the two bearings. The dual-bearing support ensures stable rotation of the cotton-picking head during picking, reduces the slipping phenomenon of the clutch when the drum does not rotate, and improves the picking efficiency.
III. Triple-sealing Structure - Isolating Cotton Fuzz, Sediment and Moisture
The maintenance-free bearing unit of the NMT cotton picker adopts a triple-sealing structure specifically designed for the harsh working conditions of cotton picking:
▷ The first layer: Outer layer of frizz-reducing lip treatment
The outer sealing lip is made of wear-resistant rubber material. During the rotation of the bearing, it actively removes the cotton fibers and fibers adhering to the surface of the sealing piece, preventing the accumulation of a large amount of cotton fibers and preventing them from entangling the sealing structure. The special angle design of the lip causes a centrifugal throwing effect during rotation, which dislodges the cotton fibers and fiber debris from the sealing area.
▷ The second level: Labyrinthine winding passages
NMT added an inner sleeve on the inner ring and increased the axial lip at the sealing structure to form a labyrinth seal structure. The multiple curved channels of the labyrinth use the rotational centrifugal force to continuously dislodge possible fibers, dust, and moisture that may enter. This labyrinth structure makes the path for pollutant intrusion more complex, significantly improving the sealing performance. Sealing structures were set at the sealing points of the housing and the hub shaft to ensure the sealing of the entire device.
▷ Third layer: Inner contact-type rubber sealing lip
The innermost sealing lip closely adheres to the inner ring's rotating surface, forming the final defense line. It effectively retains the lubricating grease and prevents fine dust and moisture from entering. Even under extremely dusty conditions where cotton fibers are flying around, it still maintains the cleanliness and lubrication inside the bearing chamber.
IV. Part-based Bearing Solution - Precisely Tailored for the Five Core Systems of the Cotton Harvester
▸ Bearing for the Gearing Box of the Harvesting Head
The head gear box of the cotton picker is the part most prone to bearing failures. The rolling bearings are subjected to the dual challenges of the impact loads generated by the equipment's operation and the harsh working environment. NMT offers heavy-duty deep groove ball bearings and tapered roller bearing solutions, with a dual-bearing support structure to enhance the rotational stability of the cotton picker head during harvesting. Combined with C3 clearance to adapt to temperature rises, it ensures stable operation under high-load conditions.
Thread-driven bearing
The stripper is the core harvesting component of the cotton picker, with the bearing speed of the stripper reaching 2500 - 3800 r/min. It is subjected to high-speed rotation, continuous radial loads and lateral impacts. NMT offers solutions of needle roller bearings and deep groove ball bearings. The needle roller bearings provide high radial load capacity in a compact space, suitable for the limited installation space of the stripper drive. The O-ring design effectively prevents cotton fibers and dust from entering.
Doffing disc (Doffer) bearing
The cotton stripper removes the cotton from the reed, subjecting it to high-speed rotation and continuous friction. NMT provides special ball bearings for the cotton stripper to optimize the efficiency of cotton removal. The reinforced sealing structure resists dust and high loads. The low-friction design reduces energy consumption and extends the harvesting operation time.
Packaging roller and cotton gathering bin bearing
At both ends of the packing rollers on the upper part of the baling compartment of the cotton picker, dust-proof bearings are installed. The packing rollers bear the continuous heavy load and packing pressure caused by the accumulation of cotton. NMT provides heavy-duty maintenance-free bearing units and dust-proof bearings. The spherical section and the arc-shaped groove are designed to cooperate to provide self-aligning capability. The dual protection of the sealing ring and the sealing ring prevents cotton絮 and dust from entering. The maintenance-free design means that no grease injection maintenance is required throughout the entire harvest season.
Walking wheel and side wheel reducer bearings
In the reducer of the side wheels of the cotton picker, the lubricating oil at the gear will flow onto the oil guide sleeve as the gear rotates, and then fall along the oil guide sleeve onto the bearing to achieve lubrication for the bearing. NMT provides sealed maintenance-free bearing units. The sealing areas of the housing and the hub shaft are equipped with sealing structures to ensure the sealing of the entire device. The entire side wheel reducer does not require frequent addition of lubricating oil.

VI. Factory Simulation Condition Test - Verification of Harsh Environment in Cotton Fields
All products undergo four specific tests before leaving the factory:
Cotton lint entanglement and invasion test - Simulates the cotton lint and fiber environment during the operation of a cotton picker, to verify the effectiveness of the seal and the anti-entanglement capability
Sealing test in sandy and dusty environment – Simulates the sandy and dusty environment of a cotton field to test the sealing effectiveness and wear amount
High-speed rotation life test - Continuous operation at a rotational speed of 2500 - 3800 r/min to verify the high-speed stability and wear resistance of the bearings.
Rotational torque and accuracy inspection - Sequentially test the starting torque and rotational accuracy to ensure low torque and installation consistency
All non-conforming products must be scrapped. The bearing units of the same batch are highly consistent in terms of size, torque and sealing performance, which facilitates the unified management of spare parts for large farms and cotton-picking service teams.
VII. Life Cycle Cost Optimization - Guarding the Golden Harvest Window
The harvesting window for cotton harvesters is only from September to November, a mere three months. A single day of machine downtime results in the loss of the entire harvest progress and the quality of the cotton. Traditional bearings frequently fail under harsh harvesting conditions, and a single harvest season may require multiple replacements. It is extremely difficult to replace bearings in the deep parts of the cotton field, and the maintenance time and cost are very high.
The hidden costs of traditional bearings:
The entanglement of cotton fibers led to the failure of the seal, reducing the bearing's lifespan by more than 50%.
The sediment intrusion accelerates wear and tear. The harvesting head bearing needs to be replaced 2-3 times in a season.
At high rotational speeds, the lubricating grease is lost, causing the retaining pin bearing to burn out prematurely.
The single-bearing support structure leads to uneven force distribution and significant vibration, accelerating the wear of the gears.
During the harvest season, an unexpected failure occurred, causing the loss of the best harvesting window. As a result, the quality of the cotton declined and its price dropped.
The maintenance-free bearings of the NMT cotton picker can ensure a stable service life of up to 2-3 harvest seasons on the picking head, the pick hook drive mechanism, and the packaging rollers.
The frequency of replacements has decreased by over 70% - during the harvest season, there will no longer be frequent shutdowns due to bearing failures, ensuring a stable harvest window.
Triple-layer maze sealing barrier separates cotton wool and sediment – effective control of cotton wool entanglement and dust intrusion, and grease remains clean
The maintenance-free design completely eliminates the need for field grease injection – saving labor costs and eliminating the pollution risks associated with improper grease injection.
The double-bearing support structure enhances the stability of the cotton picker head – ensuring rotational stability, reducing drum slippage, and improving picking efficiency.
The lifespan of the supporting components (sheaves, gears, shafts) has been extended – the overall overhaul cycle of the machine has been prolonged, and the comprehensive holding cost has been significantly reduced.
For large cotton farming farms, cotton harvesting service teams, and enterprises in the cotton industry chain, the comprehensive holding cost of the NMT cotton harvester's maintenance-free bearings is much lower than the repeated replacement cost of traditional bearings - what is saved is not the difference in bearing prices, but the certainty of uninterrupted operation during the golden harvest period.
