NMT Precision Bearings for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) – Drive Wheels, Steering Wheels, Lifting Mechanisms & Steering Systems – Maintenance-Free, Long-Life & Low-Energy, In Stock & Customizable
I. Core Faults of AGV Bearing
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are the core equipment for modern intelligent logistics and manufacturing, undertaking 24-hour continuous material handling tasks in factories, warehouses, hospitals, and other scenarios. The bearings of AGVs need to meet requirements of high load capacity, long service life, low rolling resistance, and high sealing performance. However, the special operating conditions of AGVs impose extremely demanding tests on the bearings beyond those of ordinary industrial equipment.
Common failure modes:
Impact loads from frequent starts and stops – AGVs need to frequently start, turn, and accelerate/decelerate during operation. The drive wheels and steering wheel bearings bear alternating impact loads at each start and stop moment. The retaining rings of ordinary bearings are prone to deformation or cracking under repeated impacts, and the misalignment of rolling elements leads to the disintegration of the bearings. A manufacturing enterprise found that in high-temperature workshop environments, 60% of AGVs experienced a 30% increase in failure rate due to poor bearing lubrication.
Dust and moisture intrusion – AGVs mostly operate in industrial workshops or warehouse logistics environments. Factors such as ground impurities, humidity, and temperature changes accelerate bearing wear. Dust particles enter the bearings and mix with the lubricating grease to form abrasive paste, accelerating the wear of the raceways and rolling elements. In humid environments, water intrusion also leads to the emulsification and deterioration of the lubricating grease.
Lubricant loss and maintenance difficulties – The installation space for the drive wheels and steering wheels of AGVs is extremely limited. Traditional bearings are difficult to design effective sealing structures, and lubricating grease gradually loses over long-term operation. AGVs typically operate 24 hours continuously, making on-site grease injection and maintenance extremely inconvenient. When lubrication is insufficient, the bearings dry grind, causing a sharp increase in temperature and eventually burning out.
Installation limitations in compact spaces – Due to the limited installation space of transportation vehicles, designers often cannot use traditional rolling bearings and need a space-saving alternative solution. Ordinary bearings are too large to fit the compact drive modules of AGVs, or their installation blocks the maintenance channels.
Energy consumption and range pressure – AGVs rely on battery power for operation, and the friction resistance of the bearings directly consumes electrical energy. High-friction bearings not only shorten the range after each battery charge but also increase motor heating, accelerating the aging of the entire vehicle. AGV manufacturers are increasingly demanding low-energy consumption and high-efficiency bearings.
II. From "Rotating" to "Efficient Rotation": NMT's Low Energy Consumption Technology System
✅ Hollowed-out Rolling Elements Design – NMT significantly reduces the weight of the steel balls through hollowing-out design, significantly reducing the impact force on the retaining rings and raceways during reciprocating motion of each rolling element. To ensure that the hollow structure does not lose its load-bearing capacity, NMT uses a gradually varying wall thickness hot isostatic pressing process, making the wall thickness of the equatorial area of the steel balls greater than the poles, retaining sufficient strength in the direction of maximum force. When AGVs change direction several times per second, these lightweight rolling elements can respond quickly without being hindered by their own inertia on the dynamic response of the entire vehicle.
✅ Fluid Dynamic Pressure Lubrication Technology – NMT introduces micro-metric fluid dynamic pressure grooves between the retaining rings and the guiding surfaces. When the bearing rotates, these grooves act like miniature pumps, drawing lubricating oil into the contact interface to form a stable supporting film. This design converts the sliding friction between the retaining rings and the guiding surfaces into fluid friction, reducing the friction coefficient by an order of magnitude. In AGV drive wheels under light load and high speed, NMT bearings save energy that is sufficient to allow battery-powered mobile robots to operate for an additional half hour after a single battery charge, while the reduction in motor temperature also extends the lifespan of the entire vehicle.
✅ High Purity Alloy Steel + Special Heat Treatment – NMT uses vacuum degassing high-purity bearing steel, significantly reducing the content of non-metallic inclusions. In frequent start-stop and continuous alternating stress conditions of AGV bearings, inclusions are the main source of fatigue cracks. NMT adopts a differentiated heating strategy - the raceway surface is rapidly heated to the austenitization temperature and then rapidly quenched, while the core part undergoes a relatively gentle phase transformation process, ultimately forming a hardened layer with uniform thickness and low residual austenite content. This treatment method ensures that the raceway size of the bearing does not slowly change due to phase transformation-induced stress under the frequent acceleration and deceleration conditions of the AGV.
III. Positioning Bearing Solution - Precisely Adapted to the Four Core Systems of AGV
▸ Drive Wheel Bearing
The drive wheel bearing of the AGV needs to withstand large radial loads and certain axial forces, especially during frequent starting and stopping, turning, and full-load operation, which places high reliability requirements on the bearing. Drive wheels often use deep groove ball bearings or tapered roller bearings; the former is suitable for medium loads and higher rotational speeds, with good versatility; the latter, due to its excellent load-bearing capacity, is often used in heavy-duty AGVs.
NMT provides two solutions for the AGV drive wheel bearings: sealed deep groove ball bearings and tapered roller bearings. The deep groove ball bearings adopt a low-friction design, with low rolling resistance and low heat generation; the tapered roller bearings are suitable for heavy-duty AGVs and can simultaneously withstand radial and axial combined loads. The C3 clearance adapts to temperature rise, ensuring dimensional stability during long-term continuous operation. The optional low-resistance sealing structure ensures dust prevention without increasing additional friction resistance.
▸ Steering Wheel and Steering System Bearings
After long-term use, the friction resistance of the steering bearings and seals of the AGV steering wheel increases. Common problems include bearing lubrication failure, aging and deforming of the sealing ring, foreign objects entering the steering gap, and improper axial preload. The steering wheel steering bearings need to withstand radial loads, axial loads, and overturning moments in a compact space.
NMT provides angular contact ball bearings and cross roller bearing solutions. Angular contact ball bearings provide bidirectional axial load-bearing capacity in a small axial space, suitable for the steering conditions of the steering wheel. Cross roller bearings achieve high rigidity and overturning moment bearing capacity within a very small cross-sectional height, suitable for AGV steering wheel modules with extremely high space and rigidity requirements.
▸ Lifting and Scissor Mechanism Bearings
When the AGV's lifting device and scissor-type lift carry loads ranging from several hundred kilograms to several tons, the bearings need to maintain smooth lifting and lowering under high loads, while being insensitive to vibration. Traditional metal bearings have high friction resistance in high loads and require regular lubrication.
NMT provides thrust cylindrical roller bearings and spherical roller bearings solutions. Thrust cylindrical roller bearings provide bidirectional axial load-bearing capacity in a restricted space, suitable for the steering conditions of the steering wheel. Cross roller bearings achieve high rigidity and overturning moment bearing capacity within a very small cross-sectional height, suitable for AGV steering wheel modules with extremely high space and rigidity requirements.
▸ Swivel Supports and Rotating Units
Some AGVs require 360° rotation functionality. Swivel support bearings need to bear overturning moments and maintain low friction rotation in a compact space. Ordinary swivel supports are large in volume and heavy, not suitable for the lightweight requirements of AGVs.
NMT provides thin-wall cross roller swivel supports with extremely thin cross-sectional height, providing high rigidity and smooth rotation in a limited space. The cross rollers are arranged 90° orthogonally, simultaneously bearing radial, axial, and overturning moments. The sealing structure adopts a labyrinth design to prevent dust and moisture from invading.
IV. Labyrinth Sealing Structure - AGV Bearings' "Adaptive" Dust Prevention Solution
The AGV operating environment is filled with dust, moisture, and ground debris. Sealing is the first line of defense for the lifespan of AGV bearings. Traditional bearings increase complex sealing rings to block contaminants, but the sealing rings themselves increase friction resistance and consume electrical energy. NMT has adopted a unique improvement plan for the sealing structure of AGV bearings - instead of adding complex sealing rings inside the bearings, it designs the outer edge of the cage into a labyrinth-like curved channel, combined with special lubricating grease to form a dynamic barrier. When the wheels rotate, the centrifugal force will throw the lubricating grease towards the outlet of the labyrinth channel, preventing external contaminants from entering the interior of the bearings.
The core advantages of this adaptive sealing mechanism:
Active protection - using the rotational centrifugal force to "throw" contaminants out instead of passively blocking them
Low friction - non-contact sealing, without adding additional friction resistance, and without consuming electrical energy
Self-cleaning - automatically discharging possible trace dust and moisture when rotating
Long-lasting protection - even in rough ground and dusty environments, the bearing life will not be significantly shortened due to environmental influences
For AGVs that operate continuously 24 hours in industrial workshops and warehouse logistics environments, this adaptive sealing mechanism means longer maintenance cycles and more stable operational reliability.
V. Special lubrication solution - adapted for 24-hour continuous operation
AGVs usually operate non-stop for 24 hours, and on-site grease maintenance is extremely inconvenient. NMT provides a graded lubrication solution:
▷ Standard conditions: Long-life low-friction lubricating grease
Suitable for AGV drive wheels and steering wheels in general industrial environments. The low-friction coefficient design reduces rolling resistance and reduces energy consumption. The long-life formula ensures stable lubrication performance under 24-hour continuous operation conditions. The temperature range is -20°C to 120°C.
▷ Clean environment: Low-volatile and low-dust lubricating grease
Suitable for AGVs in clean environments such as semiconductor factories and pharmaceutical warehouses. The low-volatile characteristic prevents lubricant from contaminating surrounding equipment and goods. The low-dust characteristic meets the requirements of clean room grades.
▷ High-temperature workshop: High-temperature synthetic lubricating grease
Suitable for AGVs in high-temperature environments such as casting workshops and heat treatment workshops (up to 180°C). The synthetic base oil is mixed with high-temperature thickening agent, and it does not carbonize or lose in high temperatures.
▷ Maintenance-free pre-lubrication solution (optional) - NMT provides factory pre-lubrication and lifetime sealing AGV bearing units. After installation, no on-site grease maintenance is required, completely eliminating the workload and pollution risks of lubrication management.
VI. Ready stock + Non-standard customization - AGV production line emergency repair guarantee
Common AGV bearing models (deep groove ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, cross roller bearings) have regular inventory - covering 80% of the bearing replacement requirements for AGV drive wheels, steering wheels, and lifting mechanisms. AGV production line emergency faults are dispatched on the same day, minimizing the duration of logistics downtime.
Customizable projects - special inner and outer diameters/widths, customized clearances (C2/C3/C4), low-resistance sealing, stainless steel material, special lubricating grease filling (long-life/low-dust/high-temperature), hollow rolling body design.
Quick prototyping based on old bearings or drawings - small batch urgent orders are delivered quickly. Affordable replacement of imported brands (SKF, FAG, NSK, NTN, IKO), significantly reducing procurement costs.
VII. Factory simulation condition testing - AGV stable operation is guaranteed
All products undergo four special tests before leaving the factory:
Frequent start-stop impact life test - simulates the frequent start-stop and turning conditions of AGVs, verifying the bearing's anti-impact and anti-fatigue capabilities
Dust/wet environment sealing test - simulates industrial workshop dust and humid environments, testing the effectiveness of the labyrinth seal
Low friction energy consumption test - measures the bearing's friction torque under rated load, verifying the low-energy design
Noise and vibration detection - individually tests the running noise and vibration values to ensure AGV low-noise operation requirements
Defective products shall be scrapped. Bearings of the same batch are highly consistent in terms of size, clearance, and torque, facilitating unified management and planned replacement of spare parts by the AGV fleet.
VIII. Lifecycle Cost Optimization - Reducing downtime and energy consumption losses
One hour of unplanned downtime for AGV results in a loss of operational efficiency for the entire logistics line. The reliability of AGV drive wheel bearings is the foundation for the stable operation of the entire vehicle. Frequent replacement of bearings not only increases maintenance costs but also leads to a decrease in logistics efficiency and shortened battery range.
Implicit costs of low-priced ordinary bearings:
The frequent start-stop impact requires bearings to be replaced within 6 to 12 months
After the seal fails, dust invades, reducing the bearing life by more than 50%
High friction resistance consumes energy, reducing the range of a single charge by 15-20%
The high cost of on-site grease maintenance is high, and improper grease application introduces pollution risks
AGV downtime for maintenance causes the interruption of logistics rhythm, affecting the efficiency of the entire production line
NMT AGV-specific bearings have a stable service life of up to 24-36 months on the drive wheels, rudder wheels, and lifting mechanisms:
The replacement frequency is reduced by more than 60% - the number of unplanned downtimes per year is significantly reduced, ensuring logistics efficiency
Maze seals provide long-term dust and moisture protection - dust and moisture intrusion is effectively controlled, and lubricating grease remains clean
Low friction design extends battery range - a single charge can run for an additional half hour, significantly reducing the operating cost of the AGV fleet
Maintenance-free solutions completely eliminate on-site grease application - saving labor costs and eliminating the pollution risks caused by improper grease application
The lifespan of supporting components (drive motor, reducer, hub) is extended - the major overhaul cycle is prolonged, and the overall holding cost is significantly reduced
For AGV fleet operators of intelligent factories, smart warehouses, e-commerce logistics centers, and hospital logistics systems, the comprehensive holding cost of NMT AGV-specific bearings is much lower than the repeated replacement cost of low-priced bearings - what is saved is not the difference in bearing prices, but the economic certainty of the continuous and uninterrupted operation of the AGV fleet and the logistics system.
