A Norfolk sugar facility in the UK demonstrated this vulnerability when a mechanical failure during peak season caused 30,000 tonnes of beet to be transferred to other factories in the surrounding area. At a leading South African sugar refinery in KwaZulu-Natal, premature bearing failure on a mainline pump caused significant production line downtime.

 

The data from Biscom Sugar Refinery in the Philippines is even more compelling – this 14,000-tonne capacity facility had used double-row spherical roller bearings on its main line conveyor head shaft drives for five years, with each bearing changeout requiring 24 hours of plant downtime. For a large-scale mill processing 14,000 tonnes per day, 24 hours of lost production represents losses in the tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of yuan.

 

The reality for Southern African sugar mills is even more stark – many mills shut down for the off-crop period from December to March and crush cane non-stop for the rest of the year. This means that if a bearing failure occurs during the peak production season, the entire sugar mill could come to a standstill.

 

2. Why Traditional Solid Bearings Are "Too Expensive to Replace"

Sugar mill equipment operates under what can only be described as "bearing-killer" conditions: acidic corrosion from sugarcane juice, syrup temperatures exceeding 80°C, sustained high humidity, high concentrations of dust, and heavy impact loads. However, what truly costs sugar mills dearly is not just bearing service life – it's the time required to replace a bearing.

 

The traditional solid bearing replacement process: shutdown → disassemble couplings → remove motor → remove gearbox → move shaft → slide on new bearing → realign → reassemble → recommission. Sugar industry experts in South Africa note that a solid bearing can take up to 24 hours to remove. And most of those 24 hours are spent on disassembling and reassembling auxiliary equipment – motors, gearboxes, couplings, frames – not on the bearing itself.

 

What makes it even more frustrating is equipment location. Conveyor bearings are often trapped between the drive motor and gearbox. The advantage of split bearings is especially valuable in hard-to-reach or trapped places. Operating heavy lifting equipment in confined spaces is not only time-consuming but also presents safety hazards.

 

"Solid bearings still predominate, largely because they are initially cheaper to purchase" – as industry publication DPA Magazine points out. But this short-sighted cost perspective ignores the overall lifetime costs. When a single bearing replacement requires 24 hours of downtime, the price difference of the bearing itself is negligible compared to the capacity loss.

 

3. NMT Split Bearings – From 24 Hours to 1 Hour

The core design logic of NMT split bearings is remarkably simple: the inner ring, outer ring, rolling elements and cage are all split along the axial direction. Installation is completed directly on the shaft in situ, without removing the shaft, couplings, gearboxes, motors or any other core components.

After an initial assessment period, the Biscom team confirmed the split bearing was up to the challenge and subsequently ordered further units for all their main line conveyor head shaft drives.

 

Data from South African sugar mills is equally compelling: a solid bearing can take up to 24 hours to remove, while a split bearing can usually be changed in under two hours.
